The Gently Rolling Cotswold Hills

Quaint thatched cottages, pubs and tea rooms and stunning views all the way to Wales

The Cotswolds

The Cotswolds, an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, is arguably the prettiest and most popular destination in England. This escarpment of hills (or wolds) runs from Chipping Campden in the north to the City of Bath in the south and, perched on hilltops or tucked in valleys, you will find stunning towns and villages featuring houses, cottages and pubs built from soft, golden Cotswold stone. Many have that perfectly English thatched roof and, in spring and summer, roses climb up ancient walls and cottage gardens abound with colour and fragrance.

The Cotswolds, only two hours from London Heathrow (and even less from Birmingham International airport) have something to suit everyone. Walkers and ramblers love the miles and miles of footpaths which spider across meadows and hillsides dotted with Cotswold sheep, over stiles and woodland and through valleys and villages with their towering Wool churches, built when the Cotswolds was the flourishing centre of the wool trade. Cyclists will relish the challenge of steep hillclimbs and winding lanes, golfers can try their hand at tricky courses and those who thrill seek can find balloon rides with breathtaking views.

For those that love history and culture, the Cotswolds is a must-see destination thanks to a heritage which stretches back thousands of years. Begin at Stratford-upon-Avon, the birthplace of Shakespeare, and you can track a story in every road, lane and footpath which takes you from neolithic times, through the Roman occupation, to the Medieval era and 18th Century splendour to the creativity and culture of the present day.

And the shopping! Antique shops abound, as do farm shops selling delicious local produce. Towns such as Cheltenham and Bath offer fashion, galleries and Michelin starred restaurants, and dotted about you'll find art galleries and boutiques run by people passionate about what they do.
