They call it God's Own County

Small wonder with its stunning moors, gentle dales and historic cities and market towns

Jorvik Viking Centre

A must-see attraction to be included in any visit to York, not least because it reveals in a lively way an important part of the history of this part of England. The remains of 1,000 year old houses are revealed beneath your feet, objects taken from the excavations are explored and Viking-age timbers are brought before your eyes. There are new audio and video displays which help piece together the jigsaw of where the Vikings came from, why they came here and how they lived and died.

The Jorvik Viking Centre is set on the site of one of the most exciting archeological discoveries of recent times as digs revealed the houses, workshops and backyards of the Viking-Age city of Jorvik as it stood 1,000 years ago. The result is a recreation of the period with models and sound, and even smells, as you see inside their houses, experience a blast of smoke from a blacksmith's furnace and enjoy the smell of home-cooked stew. The Centre can get busy, so best to book in advance.

Visit the Centre's Website here.
